Will They Still Come? An Archivist's Reflection:
Our library's Archivist, Jennifer Baer Hurl, shared this reflection at this month's Writers' Group session. I was impressed, and asked if I might share this as a post on the library blog. Jennifer presides over our Pennsylvania Room, which houses local history and genealogy resources. Genealogy/local history services have been part of our library since its early days. The Pennsylvania Room wall displays portraits of those who guided those efforts through the years. Peop

A is for Almost August! Amazing!
This year is flying by! I can hardly believe that it's almost August! Amazing! It's also Annual Appeal time. Thank you to everyone who has kindly and generously donated. We appreciate every dollar. We quite literally could not survive without your donations. We must meet state staffing and collection standards in order to receive state aid, but less than a third of our needed funding comes from all the combined state and other government sources -- for the rest, we depe

One Book, Two Reviews
"There is a book for every reader and a reader for every book ." This quote by S. R. Ranganathan is something every library science student probably hears at some point in their training. One of the things I love about books is how two different people can read the same book, with each having a totally different experience one from the other, and each walking away from the book with a different opinion of what they've read. It's a matter of perspective. Each person has his

Books and Chocolate
These are a few of my favorite things : books and chocolate. And cats, but we can't have a cat in the library -- some people are allergic. However, we do have books -- and as I write this, we have chocolate, too! Yes, after missing out for two years due to Covid-19, Death by Chocolate is back!!! If you're not familiar with Death by Chocolate , it is the annual (at least, until Covid-19) chocolate creation contest and auction that our wonderful Friends of the Meyersdale Pub

Meyersdale Memories
Meyersdale will celebrate its 150th Anniversary -- Sesquicentennial -- next year in 2024. For 122 of those years, it had a weekly newspaper originally called the Meyersdale Republican, and more lately The New Republic. The New Republic is no more, but a treasure trove of photos and negatives from its past are currently in residence in our Pennsylvania Room. We thank publisher George Menser for his generosity. This is the background behind our newest program, The Way We Were

Vicki Rock's 2022 Five-Star Reads
This week, we welcome guest blogger Vicki Rock! This was another year of excellent books. These are what I consider to be the five-star books I reviewed this year, listed in order of publication. “A Narrow Door” by Joanne Harris, Pegasus Crime. A body is found at a private school, but the headmaster isn’t in a hurry to call the police. “Something to Hide” by Elizabeth George, Viking. A detective’s murder may be tied to an investigation into crimes against Nigerian girls. “The
