Sunglasses, sun, words "Summer at the Library"

Summer has arrived, and it's hot outside. If you have time, why not come in and cool down at the library? The AC is on, the WiFi is working, and we have plenty for you to read! There are some great programs planned, too. Join us for summer stories & surprises @ your library!

First, I must apologize for the condition of our library grounds. We have had great weather for growing weeds, but not-so-great weather for landscaping. We do have a major project planned for our grounds over the coming weeks that will beautify our corner of town!

Next, I encourage you to take advantage of the fun our town's Meyersdale Community Events Team has planned on June 29 (the Sunday before the 4th of July) in celebration of our nation's birthday. Stop by the pavilion where our Friends of the Library group will be selling ice cream! (Proceeds benefit the library.)

The words "Color Our World" in pastel colors.

We've already kicked off our summer programming. Earlier in June, we had a program about local railroad history. (That one was rather a surprise, as a visitor from far away was willing to create a program on short notice!) There was also a presentation about Alzheimer's Disease. We're in the midst of a littleBits Coding Camp, presented by the SCFLS STEAM Team. Our annual Summer Quest program for ages 2-11 begins on July 11, and continues on Fridays until August 8. This year's theme is Color Our World. There will be stories, crafts, games, and learning fun!

Ready, Set, Draw! will offer drawing lessons with George Menser on Saturdays to youth age 12-17, starting July 12. Our book discussion group, LEGO Club, The Way We Were Club, and the Pens & Prose Writers' Group all continue through the summer. We're looking forward to a program by Lynn Shaffer celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Somerset County Fair.

As part of our work promoting job and career development, an Early Reach Coordinator from OVR will be available at the library the afternoon of July 22, and a Career Link representative will be presenting "How to Get a State Job" on July 28 at 1:30 PM.

Our online collections in the PA Power Library's PA Photos and Documents platform continue to grow. Explore them here: https://powerlibrary.org/category/collection-subjects/meyersdale-public-library/

Of course, there is always a wide range of reading material here. Why not check out a book for some summer reading?

We encourage you to take advantage of the resources and programming we offer! I do want to remind you that, while we offer it freely, it costs money for our library to provide it. Many people think of libraries as tax-funded, but government funds cover less than a third of our library's operating budget. We encourage you -- if you're able -- to contribute to our Annual Appeal. Many of you will be receiving our annual mailing requesting financial support. But even if a letter doesn't reach you, we hope that you will donate as your circumstances permit. Every little bit helps!

Wishing you a sunny and safe summer!
