Summer Library Adventures

Youth in a tent at night, reading, with a moose in the background and slogan "Adventure Begins At Your Library"

Summer is always a busy time at the library.

The Electronics and Robotics STEAM camp, June 24-28, is just about filled with registrants.

However, our year-round STEAM programs will continue through the summer with no registration requirement:

·         LEGO CLUB on Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m.

·         Magna-Tile Club on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m.

The 2024 Summer Quest theme is Adventure Begins At Your Library. The program features stories, crafts, games, and special presenters! The program ends on August 9 with a picnic sponsored by Somerset Trust Co.

Smokey the Bear will be visiting on July 19!  Did you know Smokey the Bear is turning 80 years old in 2024?

Sessions will be held at the Paul Fuller Playground in Meyersdale, weather permitting, on Fridays at 10 a.m. starting on July 12, and ending on August 9. (In the event of bad weather, check our Facebook Page or call (814) 634-0512 for information about an alternate site.) Registration is strongly encouraged so that we have enough craft materials for everyone.

People climbing a tower of huge books

Our Teen Read! and Adult Reading Challenge will be held as usual, with chances to win prizes.  Teens are asked to register and pick up a reading log and track their reading.  Adults may fill out an entry in our weekly drawing for each book that they read.  Books read between July 12 and August 9 count toward these challenges.

Sketch pad and pencil, "Ready, Set, DRAW!"

More summer fun: George Menser, who created our library's murals, will be teaching a four-week drawing class for youth age 12-17 on four Saturdays in June and July, beginning June 15, at 10:30 AM until noon.  (There will be no class on July 6.)  The class is FREE, and materials will be provided (though you may bring your own sketch pad and pencils if you prefer).  Topics that may be covered are: basic use of pencils, drawing exercises, shapes, perspective, layout, and more.  Please call the library to register for the class!

Cartoon-style list of publications cartoons appeared in

George Menser will also be presenting a program featuring some of his editorial cartoons on Tuesday, June 25 at 7:00 PM.  Did you know that George has drawn over 4,000 cartoons which have been published in both military and civilian publications?

Colorful antique bottles

The Laurel Highlands Antique Bottle Club is planning a display at the library on Saturday, July 27, between 10:00 AM and 4:30 PM.

As always, we have a wide selection of books (including large print and cd audiobooks), DVDs, and educational kits and games available to check out. Our website provides access to a wide range of online resources, including downloadable e-books, audiobooks, magazines, and premium information and educational resources.

We hope you will join us for some summer library adventures!
