We’re a Gold Star Library now!
It’s hard to believe that we’re already entering Memorial Day Weekend. Let’s all remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
We extend greetings to all Meyersdale Area Alumni who gather, and congratulations to the Class of 2021 preparing to graduate.
I am delighted to report that the Meyersdale Public Library is now a Gold Star PA Forward® Library.
For successfully incorporating the five literacies of PA Forward in your library’s programming, you are recognized with the PA Forward Gold Star Award. Your intentional investments for quality programs in Somerset County add to the collective investments in the residents of Pennsylvania. (From the PA Forward® Gold Star Certificate)
PA Forward® is an initiative of the Pennsylvania Library Association designed to move Pennsylvania forward by promoting growth in literacy for all Pennsylvanians. There are five literacy areas of focus.
Basic Literacy: Reading, writing, math, job application assistance, and overall life-skill development. Also includes STEM (Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) knowledge building on basic skills and concepts.
Civic & Social Literacy: Being able to discuss varying opinions while remaining respectful of others, understanding the value of community engagement, understanding how our legal and legislative systems work, and understanding the value of history to inform the future.
Health Literacy: Being able to understand medical information in order to be able to make informed decisions related to physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual health.
Information Literacy: Being able to express, access and understand knowledge through diverse formats, and to distinguish whether information sources are credible.
Financial Literacy: Having knowledge and understanding required to make informed financial decisions for personal and business planning, including budgeting, spending, and savings skills.
Through these literacies, PA Forward® libraries help people enhance their overall quality of life. We are always looking for new ways to meet the literacy needs of people in our area.
Have a great week!
